SUNSHINE AND BLUE WATERS!

Buying a house abroad not only involves careful selection of the actual property. You are also buying into the local culture, climate and history of the region. Cathy Riley accepts a fantastic invitation to Turkey to discover just what it has to offer!

Having endured several long haul flights of late to enjoy some exceptional travelling around the world, the opportunity of a mere four hour trip to the Lycian Coast of Turkey, courtesy of Lycia Properties was an invitation I couldn’t resist. So, armed with my smallest suitcase, a tube of sun cream, a Union Jack bikini in honour of Jubilee Year, my Kindle, (and, oh yes, my lovely husband Peter plus camera), I left Manchester for Dalaman International Airport.

Hakan Cinar, Director of Lycia Properties was our host for our stay at his beautiful villa near Sarigerme, a mere 15 minutes from Dalaman’s modern airport, now in regular use by many of the UK’s budget airlines.

Our visit coincided with that of Duncan and Leonne Jackson from Preston, who were there to meet with Lycia’s architect to go through the design for their villa which Hakan is due to build on land that he has recently sourced for them. They are regular visitors to Turkey and have immersed themselves in the culture ready for their move to Sarigerme. Leonne talked about their experience with Hakan and Lycia, “We feel in such safe hands. Hakan really does deliver what he says. Nothing is too much trouble and the service really is from cradle to grave. We considered buying in Spain, but the quality over here is just amazing and you get so much more for your money. We really love being in Turkey and can’t wait to move into our beautiful villa on the hillside in Sarigerme with panoramic views of the sea”.

After sampling fabulous Turkish hospitality for our first evening and following breakfast, (which included freshly squeezed oranges, growing only minutes earlier in Hakan’s own orchard), we left the villa mid-morning with him to view some of the properties he has built in the area. This was no hard-sell sales pitch. Hakan’s background and degree in Geophysical Engineering are perfectly applied to the homes he constructs. As the natural topography of the region is semi-mountainous, the expertise that he and his team have developed in building such fabulous villas with luxury infinity edge pools and spacious apartments, is readily apparent. The retaining walls and sub structures are massive and are just another confirmation as to the quality of the overall build.

Hakan is modest when discussing the developments he has been involved in and if you can describe what you want, his architect can design it and Hakan can build it. If steps are a problem to the less mobile, Hakan will overcome that with ramps and lifts at the development stage.

Hakan is about to start work on a new Hillside Development with twelve apartments featuring two to five bedrooms and an emphasis on external space, all within easy walking distance of the main street of Sarigerme. Being outside the EU is an advantage in the current European mess we all find ourselves in at the moment and now, more than ever, Turkish property represents excellent value for money and demand is increasing. For anyone looking to buy in a fabulous part of the world, getting in early with this off plan development is truly a ‘no-brainer’!

Hakan introduced us to the local area of Sarigerme with its natural beauty of forests rich with the sweet smell of pine and eucalyptus. The roads and streets are lined with large, exotic and colourful Oleander bushes. Orchards of orange trees and red flowering pomegranate bushes intersperse with never ending lines of tomato plants. Here the sparkling Aegean Sea meets the enticing Mediterranean and the local beach is 6km long, designated with blue flag protected area status, awarded thanks to a combination of water quality, cleanliness and safety. It is one of the most beautiful beaches in the region, no private umbrellas are allowed because of turtle nests but to hire two sun beds and a fixed sun shade costs just a couple of pounds per day. There is a wide range of water sports available including windsurfing, jet skiing, water skiing, sailing and snorkelling and the beach has modern amenities including toilets, showers, and a lifeguard service which is ideal for families with young children. The beach bar/café has some tasty snacks and drinks which cost next to nothing.
Sarigerme village is not your typical over-commercialised, tourist holiday destination, in fact it is far from it, it has a charm and character and a local sense of community. The numerous bars, restaurants and shops represent amazing value for money. Steak dinners, cocktails and beers for four people typically cost us 100 Turkish Lira, around £35 including tips. That was the combined total bill, not each!

Conservation is high on the list of Turkish priorities and in the few days we were there we saw terrapins in the river, sea turtles in a nearby Rescue Centre and many tortoises just ambling around the village!

In just one day Hakan proudly guided us around the immediate area of Sarigerme allowing its soul and genuine authenticity to quietly win our hearts. The quality of the properties speaks for itself. The services that Hakan and Lycia Properties offer include initial design and construction, local authority consents and legal requirements, even subsequent maintenance or management if required. Over recent months I have spoken, at first hand, to several people who have visited and bought properties from Hakan and Lycia Properties. Having seen for myself just how impressively they are fitted and finished, I can readily understand their confidence in making this lifestyle decision.

The immediate area is simply stunning and our obvious next step was to hire a car and explore a little further afield to see what a buyer could expect from this rich historical region. Find out how we got on in the next issue………….!
